I'm almost as careful about what I put into the dog as I am about what I put into myself and anyone else I happen to feed. I'm hardly militant, but I try to avoid unnecessarily processed ingredients, nasty fats, sweeteners where they aren't needed, added chemicals, and industrially farmed anything. So Macy's fed premium natural dog food and treats, which can be breathtakingly expensive. Treats aren't handed out wantonly; she's a well-trained dog, made so through the careful application of attention and rewards (and her own bright mind, of course). When I'm out in the woods with her and she gets out of range, I want to be damned sure she comes rocketing back when I call her, so I make sure and give her a prize (and lots of praise) every time she does (which – to date – is every time I call). I've become the Crazy Dog Lady who always has a pocketful of cookies.
